Stephen Hawking: British scientist dies at 76

Hawking was known for his ground-breaking work with black holes and relativity, often called Hawking radiation.

British physicist Stephen Hawking is dead.

He passed away at the age of 76, BBC quoted a spokesman for his family as saying.

"He was a great scientist... whose work and legacy will live on for many years", his children said in a statement.

He was an English theoretical physicist, cosmologist, author and Director of Research at the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology within the University of Cambridge.

He authored several popular science books including 'A Brief History of Time'.

Hawking was the first to set out a theory of cosmology explained by a union of the general theory of relativity and quantum mechanics, and he was a vigorous supporter of the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics.
