He passed away at the age of 76, BBC quoted a spokesman for his family as saying.
"He was a great scientist... whose work and legacy will live on for many years", his children said in a statement.

Hawking was the first to set out a theory of cosmology explained by a union of the general theory of relativity and quantum mechanics, and he was a vigorous supporter of the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics.
