Former Black Stars player, Rev Osei Kofi, has launched a scathing attack at the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Sports Ministry for lack of proper appreciation of sporting heroes and legends in the country.
The 74-year-old expressed shock at the sad demise of another iconic figure, coach Emmanuel Kwasi Afranie, known in the football circles as ‘Coach Hene’, who died on Wednesday after an ambulance transporting him from Accra to the Komfo Anokye hospital (KATH) in Kumasi was involved in an accident.
The 1965 African Nations Cup winner bemoaned what he described as lack of appreciation or honour for sports heroes in Ghana while they are alive as most of them struggle to survive.
The former Asante Kotoko player further revealed he received the shock of his life when family members of the late Jones Attuquayefio called, questioning the then Sports Minister, Dr Mustapha Ahmed, who visited them why he could not support the late coach whilst he was alive.
The one time goal king at the Cup of Nations in an interview with Ultimate FM’s Benjamin Yamoah, said authorities involved should celebrate their legends and tap into their knowledge whiles alive.
“Why don’t we enjoy during our living days but rather when we are dead before they write a nice story and come and pour it at the funeral grounds.”
“I have already made it clear to them [GFA and Sports Ministry] that if they have nothing good for me, they shouldn’t come and disclose all the things I did when I die. What do I gain after saying those things?” he fumed.
“Why are we not being honoured whiles alive?”
Osei Kofi won three league trophies for Kotoko in 1964, 65 and 67.
