MTN Ghana has rewarded 185 top-performing Mobile Money agents and merchants across the five Regions of the North.
This is to honour their contributions to the growth of MoMo services, with rewards totaling over two million Ghana cedis, primarily in e-cash incentives.
The establishment of the MTN Mobile Money (MoMo) agents and merchants in Ghana has helped to promote financial inclusion by extending convenient, secure and affordable digital financial services to millions of people, especially in underserved and remote areas where traditional banking infrastructure is limited.
The awardees were provided with MTN souvenirs, certificates with each receiving GH¢2,000 to GH¢20,000 based on the performance and sector.
Speaking at ceremony in Tamale, Senior Manager for Commercial at MTN Northern Ghana Operations, Simon Amoh, said, there has been vast improvements in customer acquisition, revenue and transaction volumes with the commitment of the company in building capacity of the agents and merchants.
“Business in the MobileMoney Limited (MML) space has been really good this year. Of all fronts, acquisitions have improved, revenue has improved and transactions have improved which has generally been a very great year for MML, the space we operate in,” he said.
As of late 2025, MTN Ghana has been restructuring MML to meet the Bank of Ghana’s requirement for at least 30% local (Ghanaian) equity participation in dedicated electronic money issuers thereby merging with a new entity (MobileMoney Fintech Limited or similar), with the new company becoming the surviving operator of MoMo, he added.
He noted that the MML has been pivotal in MoMo’s growth since its launch in 2009, transforming digital payments in Ghana with millions of users, agents, and merchants.
In view of that, he said, the company would be investing in technology to enhance business transactions.
To curb fraud, he noted that, effort is being made to devise strategy to detect fraud activities to secure the finances of both the agents, merchants and the customers, he said.
According to him, the event was to reward the stakeholders who are the key people in the MML space being the agents and the merchants.
This is the way as a company, we reward their loyalty to their business in order to help us to see them as key partners in the mobile money space, he added.
Chief Commercial and Mobile Money Officer of MML, Abdul Razak Issaka Ali said, the company has worked hard to expand the Agent and Merchant Networks with over 228,000 agents nationwide in remote villages where traditional banks are absent to transact business with MoMo.
We have enhanced MoMo tools to allow small businesses to accept digital payments, access loans, and expand beyond local markets, he said.
He stressed that, the company over the years has been playing central leadership roles in driving the platform’s growth and partnerships.
Mobile Money Implementations Manager, David Nana Addai said, the Mobile Money business has created more jobs in the Northern sector.
Some of the awardees expressed heart felt gratitude to the company for recognising their contributions towards mobile money transactions.
