The government is turning to domestic meter production as part of a broader push to curb import bills and tighten revenue collection in the power sector, following the commissioning of an electricity meter manufacturing plant in Tema.
Speaking at the inauguration of the MBH Power Limited facility, the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, said producing meters locally will help keep more value within the economy while strengthening the foundations of the electricity supply chain.
“With the establishment of MBH Power Ltd.’s manufacturing plant here in Ghana, we have taken a bold step towards local production,” he said, noting that the initiative is expected to create skilled and semi-skilled jobs, support technology transfer and build technical capacity in the energy sector.
The Minister stressed that reliable metering sits at the heart of the electricity business. From generation through transmission and distribution to the final consumer, accurate meters underpin efficiency, transparency and revenue assurance, he said. Without them, utilities struggle to account for power supplied, losses go untracked, and billing disputes multiply.
For years, Ghana has relied heavily on imported meters to meet demand. While imports helped expand access, they also drained foreign exchange and limited local participation in a critical segment of the power value chain, he added.
He said the government sees partnerships with credible private investors as key to addressing the gap. Local meter production, he noted, aligns with ongoing sector reforms aimed at reducing technical and commercial losses, improving revenue mobilisation and speeding up large-scale meter deployment.
The Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to policies that support local content, industrial growth and sustainable investment in the energy sector, saying such initiatives are essential to stabilising utilities’ finances and improving service delivery.
