There are institutions that educate. There are institutions that inspire. And then there are those rare institutions that shape generations, mould character, and quietly but powerfully influence the destiny of a nation.
For ninety-six remarkable years, St. Augustine’s College, Cape Coast, affectionately known across Ghana and beyond as AUGUSCO, has done precisely that.
As the College celebrates its 96th Anniversary in March 2026, the familiar rhythms of campus life will blend with the excitement of reunion, reflection, and renewal.
Old students will travel from across Ghana and the diaspora to return to the campus that helped shape their lives, joining current students, teachers, and well-wishers to honour a legacy that continues to grow stronger with each passing generation.
For every Augustinian and every proud APSUnian, this anniversary is more than a date on the calendar. It is a moment of pride. A moment of gratitude. And above all, a moment of reaffirmation.
A Pioneer in Ghana’s Educational History
Founded in 1930 by the Catholic Church, St. Augustine’s College holds the historic distinction of being the first Catholic secondary school established in Ghana.
From its early beginnings in Cape Coast, the College quickly became synonymous with discipline, academic excellence, leadership and character formation.
Its famous Latin motto — “Omnia Vincit Labor” — translated as “Perseverance Conquers All”, has guided generations of young men who have walked through the gates of the institution.
Those words are not merely decorative. They represent a philosophy of life that every Augustinian/APSUnian carries long after leaving school.
Across nearly a century, AUGUSCO has lived up to this motto in every sense.
Its alumni — known proudly as APSUnians — have risen to prominence in nearly every sector of national life: governance, academia, medicine, engineering, journalism, law, business, science, technology and the Church.
From the classrooms to the sports fields, the College has consistently produced leaders, innovators and patriots whose contributions continue to shape Ghana and the wider world.
A School with a Vision
At the heart of St. Augustine’s College lies a powerful mission: to provide holistic Catholic education that forms disciplined, intellectually capable and morally responsible leaders.
Guided by the rich intellectual tradition of St. Augustine of Hippo, the institution places equal emphasis on:
- Academic excellence
- Spiritual growth
- Discipline and integrity
- Leadership and service
The College’s educational philosophy recognises that true education is not limited to examinations and certificates. It is about shaping the whole person — intellectually, morally, spiritually and socially.
This balanced approach explains why the school has remained one of Ghana’s most respected secondary institutions for nearly a century.
The Spirit of the “Green and White Brigade”
Every school has its symbols, traditions and identity. For AUGUSCO, that identity is captured in the powerful image of its “Green and White Brigade,” the school’s teeming army of supporters.
The phrase speaks to the collective spirit that binds generations of APSUnians together — resilience, teamwork, pride, discipline and excellence.
Whether on the academic stage, the sports field, or in national competitions such as the National Science and Maths Quiz or The Sharks Quiz etc, AUGUSCO has built a reputation for determination and excellence.
That spirit continues to animate the campus today, where students are encouraged to discover their talents, stretch their ambitions, and develop the leadership qualities required to succeed in a rapidly changing world.
The 96th Anniversary Celebration
The 96th Anniversary celebrations, which run from March 9 to March 15, 2026, promise to be a colourful and memorable week filled with activities that celebrate tradition, excellence and brotherhood.
Throughout the week, the campus will come alive with parades, academic exhibitions, cultural performances, mentorship sessions, sporting events and social engagements designed to strengthen bonds between past and present students.
These celebrations are not merely ceremonial. They serve as an opportunity for reflection, renewal and collective commitment to the future of the College.
For many alumni, returning to Cape Coast during anniversary week is both emotional and nostalgic. Old friendships are rekindled. Memories of youthful ambition and campus life come rushing back.
And for current students, it is a powerful reminder that they are part of a larger story — a living tradition stretching across generations.
The APSU Congress – March 13
One of the most important highlights of the anniversary week will be the APSU Annual Congress, scheduled to take place on Friday, March 13, 2026, at the College Assembly Hall.
The Congress represents the heartbeat of the St. Augustine’s College Past Students Union (APSU).
It is the forum where alumni gather to discuss the future of the Union and the College, deliberate on strategic initiatives, review development projects and strengthen the bonds of brotherhood that define the APSU spirit.
Over the decades, APSU has played an extraordinary role in supporting the College. Through various year groups and global chapters, alumni have funded numerous development projects, including classrooms, laboratories, staff accommodation, scholarships and mentorship programmes.
These initiatives demonstrate that the connection between Augustinians and their alma mater does not end at graduation. It only grows stronger.
Speech and Prize-Giving Day – March 14
The celebrations will reach their climax on Saturday, March 14, 2026, when the College will host its 96th Anniversary Speech and Prize-Giving Day at the College Quadrangle.
Speech Day is one of the most cherished traditions of the school.
It is a day of recognition and celebration — honouring academic excellence, discipline, leadership and service.
Outstanding students will receive awards in recognition of their achievements, while distinguished guests will address the gathering, offering guidance and inspiration to the next generation of APSUnians.
The colourful cadet parade, regimental band performances and cultural displays will add grandeur to the occasion, creating an atmosphere of pride and celebration that has become synonymous with AUGUSCO anniversaries.
Legacy Projects – Building for the Future
A defining feature of APSU culture is the tradition of year-group legacy projects.
Each anniversary celebration often includes the commissioning or launch of a development project funded by a particular graduating year group — tangible evidence of alumni commitment to the continued growth of the College.
For the 96th anniversary cycle, the APSU 2001 Year Group has embarked on an ambitious project to construct a modern, sustainable canteen facility for the school.
The facility will incorporate innovative environmental features including solar energy systems, waste recycling mechanisms and a biogas plant to convert food waste into energy.
Beyond providing improved dining facilities, the project will also serve as a practical learning environment where students can gain exposure to sustainable technologies.
It is a bold initiative that reflects AUGUSCO’s commitment not only to tradition but also to innovation.
Brotherhood that Lasts a Lifetime
One of the most remarkable features of St. Augustine’s College is the lifelong brotherhood it fosters among its students.
Across continents and professions, Augustinians continue to identify strongly with the school and with each other.
This sense of fraternity is perhaps best captured in the APSU rallying call:
“Action! Action! Action! Nkotsee!”
It is more than a chant. It is a philosophy of collective responsibility — a call for APSUnians to remain actively engaged in supporting their alma mater and contributing to society.
The Road to the Centenary
While the 96th anniversary is a moment of celebration, it is also part of a larger journey.
Just four years from now, in 2030, St. Augustine’s College will celebrate a historic milestone — its Centenary Anniversary.
Reaching one hundred years will represent a rare and remarkable achievement for any educational institution.
Preparations for this landmark celebration have already begun in earnest, with stakeholders across the APSU network exploring ambitious projects and initiatives that will mark the centenary in a truly memorable way.
For APSUnians everywhere, the centenary will not merely be a celebration of longevity. It will be a celebration of impact — a century of shaping leaders, nurturing talents, and contributing to the development of Ghana and beyond.
A Legacy that Endures
As AUGUSCO marks ninety-six years of existence, one truth remains clear.
St. Augustine’s College is not just a school.
It is an institution built on faith, perseverance, discipline and excellence.
It is a community that continues to inspire generations of young men to believe in their potential and to strive for greatness.
And it is a legacy that will continue to endure long into the future.
As APSUnians gather once again on the historic campus in Cape Coast — in the Assembly Hall, at the Quadrangle, and under the familiar green and white banners — they will celebrate not only the past but also the promise of the future.
For nearly a century, AUGUSCO has proven the timeless truth of its motto:
Omnia Vincit Labor.
Indeed, perseverance conquers all.
And for St. Augustine’s College, the journey to even greater heights continues.
APSU… Action! Nkotsee!
