The Ghana Education Service (GES) has partnered with the Ghana Federation of American Football (GFAF) to expand sports education across the country, with a new capacity-building programme scheduled to train 200 participants.
The training is expected to include coaches, referees, physiotherapists, team managers and media personnel in all 16 regions from May 4 to December 2026.
The collaboration follows a previous intensive 14-day training held in 2025 at the University of Ghana Rugby Stadium for all 16 regional Physical Education (PE) and sports coordinators.
The training significantly enhanced their competencies and positioned them to effectively cascade the acquired knowledge and skills to the district and school levels within their respective jurisdictions.
Under the newly outlined four-phase timeline, starting with GFAF certification activation on May 4, 2026, followed by international body certification, guided practicals with regional team formation and equipment distribution and concluding with a national flag football exhibition, the programme aims to establish operational flag football teams nationwide.
GFAF Secretary-General Mohammed Osman Nkosi said the training is strategically designed to build capacity, systems and a talent pipeline ahead of the 2028 Olympics, where flag football will make its debut.
GES Director of PE and Sports Michael Ntow Ayeh reaffirmed the service’s commitment to equipping teachers with modern pedagogical approaches for sports development.
“In alignment with this strategic direction, we wish to affirm our active participation and partnership with the federation in advancing this capacity-building agenda. Our joint efforts are focused on organising and delivering training programmes aimed at equipping teachers, particularly Physical Education teachers, with the requisite skills, knowledge and modern pedagogical approaches needed to enhance sports development and the delivery of Physical Education in schools”, he said.
He added that the GES is confident that this continued collaboration will contribute immensely to improving the quality of PE and sports development nationwide, in line with the broader objectives of the Ghana Education Service.
These include phase one: GFAF certification activation; phase two: international body certification; phase three: guided practical, formation of regional teams, distribution of equipment, guided team development activities; and phase four: national flag football exhibition.
The capacity-building programme will be headed by Chadwick Louisville, the Senior Coaching Advisor of GFAF and Head Football Coach of West Potomac High School in Virginia, USA.
