The 3i Africa Summit 2026 officially opened with an invitational golf tournament at the Achimota Golf Club in Accra, as the Bank of Ghana positioned the event as both a sporting competition and a strategic networking platform ahead of the main summit.
Bank of Ghana Governor Johnson Asiama performed the ceremonial tee-off at the one-day tournament on May 5, drawing more than 100 amateur golfers from clubs across Ghana and other African countries.
Organisers said the event was designed to bring together policymakers, corporate executives, investors and technology innovators in an informal setting that could help foster partnerships and support Africa’s economic transformation agenda.
The tournament, organised by Head of State Golf Tournament Inc. with support from the Bank of Ghana, Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement Systems, the Global Finance& Technology Network and the 3i Africa Summit 2026, featured an 18-hole Stableford competition across multiple categories.
Former captain of Achimota Golf Club, Sjoerd Grueter, emerged overall winner of the maiden tournament after overcoming a competitive field of golfers. The event also coincided with celebrations marking the 58th birthday of Dr. Asiama.
In the Men’s Group A category, Grueter, playing off Handicap 9, secured victory ahead of Isaac Aninakwah and Solomon Allotey. Moses Kanduri won the Men’s Group B category with 38 Stableford points, while Max Ernst Heinrich placed second after beating Charles Ofori on countback.

In the women’s competition, Vastie Amoafo-Yeboah won the Ladies Group A category with 34 Stableford points, edging out Princess Nkansah-Boadu on countback. Anita Ohene Mantey claimed the Ladies Group B title with 41 points, ahead of Akua Tamakloe and Christine Furler.
Joe Mucheru won the visitors’ men category with 38 points, while Nshuti Mbabazi finished second.
Special awards saw Yaw Afriyie and Letitia Amponsah-Mensah win the men’s and women’s longest drive prizes respectively, while Grueter and Helen Appah took the closest-to-the-pin honours.
Addressing participants, Dr. Asiama commended golfers for turning out in large numbers and called on the Ghana Golf Association and Achimota Golf Club to work toward positioning Ghana to host a major international golf tournament within the next three years.
He said Ghana had the potential to become a preferred destination for elite golf events, citing the quality of the Achimota course and the country’s growing reputation for hosting international events.
