AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) Obuasi Mine has inaugurated a GH¢2.86million piggery production centre at Sanso in the Obuasi municipality as part of efforts to create alternative livelihoods and expand economic opportunities beyond mining.
The facility, developed under the mine’s 10-year Socio-Economic Development Plan (SEDP), is expected to increase pig production, improve food security and support agribusiness development in the Obuasi municipality and Obuasi East district.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Director of Sustainability Management-AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine, Edmund Oduro Agyei, said the project forms part of the company’s strategy to support sustainable livelihoods and strengthen local economies through agriculture.
He noted that agriculture remains a key component of the mine’s community development programme, alongside initiatives such as the Climate Resilience Oil Palm Plantation Programme (CROPP) and Piggery and Aquaculture Programme launched in 2025.
According to Mr. Oduro Agyei, the piggery programme’s pilot phase recorded significant growth – with nine beneficiary farmers increasing their combined pig population from 173 to 428 animals. These results informed establishing the new production centre.
The facility comprises 20 pig pens, office and storage facilities, breeding stock and a solar-powered energy system. AGA invested GH¢1.49million in construction and a further GH¢1.37million in breeding stock, veterinary services, training programmes and feed support for beneficiaries.
The project was executed by local contractor X-Mell Construction. Management of the facility has been assigned to the Obuasi Municipal Cooperative Pig Farmers and Marketing Society Limited, whose members have received training in animal husbandry, record-keeping and cooperative management.
Obuasi Municipal Chief Executive Faustilove Appiah Kanin commended the initiative and urged beneficiaries to manage the facility effectively, ensuring its long-term sustainability and economic impact.
