Suspended staff of the Ghana Water Limited (GWL) are crying for justice as about 144 staff members have been called off duty indefinitely without their salaries being paid to them.
In a letter dated February 6, 2026, and signed by Mr. Yussif Amuda Adam, Mr. Imoro Yussif, Mr. Jamal-Deen Ayman, Mrs. Emelia Dibik Jawam and Mr. Ahmed Seidu, the suspended staff highlighted that they have been subjected to unlawful and inhumane suspension by the Managing Director of GWL, Adam Mutawakilu, since February 11, 2025, which has contributed to the hardship they are facing as Ghanaians.
“Since February 11, 2025, a total of 144 Ghanaian workers of the Ghana Water Limited have been subjected to an unlawful, unconstitutional, undemocratic, wicked, disrespectful, heartless, illegal, and inhumane suspension without salary by the Managing Director of Ghana Water Limited, Hon Adam Mutawakilu (Gallus). For close to a year now, families have been pushed into hardship, dignity has been stripped away, and hope has been stretched to its breaking point, without explanation, without due process and without mercy,” the letter stated.
The suspended staff argued that new appointment letters were issued on August 22, 2025, during the period of their suspension, questioning transparency, fairness and compassion in the industry.
Again, in a letter dated January 30, 2026 to the President, the aggrieved staff petitioned President John Dramani Mahama over their suspension, stating that they were recruited in November 2024.
It stated, “In November 2024, by the grace of Almighty Allah, our years of education, sacrifice and perseverance were rewarded when we were legally and duly recruited into Ghana Water Limited after undergoing transparent and lawful recruitment processes,” adding that they reported to their duty stations on January 13, 2025, only to be suspended on February 11, 2026.
“On January 13, 2025, we reported to our various duty stations across the country with joy, pride, hope and a deep sense of national duty, our staff identification were processed and we awaited our January and February salaries in good faith. Then, on February 11, 2025, our lives changed overnight.”
The staff stressed that without explanation, they were summoned before regional chief managers and showed directives instructing the suspension of only staff recruited in November 2024.
“Without any prior hearing, explanation, regional chief managers summoned us and showed us a directive instructing them to suspend only staff recruited in November 2024,” the letter stated, noting that the sole justification offered was to “allow for an assessment and comprehensive audit of the recruitment process,” which has resulted in 12 months of no communication, no findings, no conclusions, no reinstatement and no salaries.
The staff highlighted that their condition contradicts with the promise made by the President to the youth of the country, which include the reset agenda and the same job three shifts, three people policy, but rather contributed to them being rendered jobless, hopeless, frustrated and abandoned.
The group appealed to the President to reinstate all affected November 2024 staff, ensure the full payment of all outstanding salaries and entitlements, conduct a transparent investigation into the actions of the Managing Director, as well as a resolution of the issue before the end of February 2026.
