Jarell Quansah has backed Mohamed Salah while declining to comment on his own relationship with Arne Slot after leaving Liverpool for Bayer Leverkusen last summer.
The English-Ghanaian defender departed Anfield in a deal worth up to £35m, seeking greater opportunities after limited involvement under the Dutch head coach.
Quansah began last season as first choice alongside Virgil van Dijk at Ipswich Town but was withdrawn at half-time, with Ibrahima Konate reclaiming his position.
The centre-back made 25 appearances in total but started only 13 matches, returning to his preferred role after Liverpool had already secured the Premier League title.
Tension intensified at Anfield when Salah criticised Slot and the club after a 3-3 draw at Leeds United, claiming he was being “thrown under the bus” and that his relationship with the coach had deteriorated.
The forward was left out of the travelling squad for the Champions League victory over Inter Milan, and his status for the Brighton match remains unresolved.
Quansah was asked about the situation as he previewed Leverkusen’s Champions League meeting with Newcastle United. The defender spoke warmly about Salah while avoiding any discussion of Slot.
“I can only speak on when I was there and what I saw from Mo,” he said. “A great role model, a great character around the dressing room who obviously had an unbelievable season and helped us win the trophy.”
