Mozambique recorded a landmark victory at the Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday, edging Gabon 3-2 in a pulsating Group F encounter at the Adrar Stadium in Agadir to claim their first-ever win in the tournament's history.
The Mambas, under the guidance of Chiquinho Conde, showed remarkable composure and attacking intent to stun their Central African opponents in a match that came alive towards the end of the first half.
After a cagey opening 30 minutes, Mozambique broke the deadlock through a well-rehearsed set-piece as Geny Catamo delivered a pinpoint cross for Faisal Bangal, who nodded home from close range.
Moments later, the underdogs doubled their advantage when Clésio Domingues was brought down in the box by Gabon defender Bruno Ecuele Manga.
Catamo stepped up confidently and dispatched the resulting penalty to give Mozambique a 2-0 cushion.
Gabon, however, found a lifeline just before the interval as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang pulled one back with virtually the last kick of the half, reducing the deficit to 2-1.
The goal shifted momentum, but Mozambique responded superbly after the restart.
Right-back Diogo Calila ghosted into the area to meet a precise delivery from Witi, directing a fine header past Loyce Mbaba to restore the two-goal lead.
Gabon refused to relent and mounted late pressure, eventually narrowing the gap again when Alex Moucketou-Moussounda reacted quickest to a rebound after Hernani Siluane’s initial save.
Despite intense late tension, Mozambique held firm deep into stoppage time to secure a historic victory.
The result significantly boosts Mozambique’s qualification hopes, while Gabon remain rooted at the bottom of Group F after suffering a second consecutive defeat.
Witi was deservedly named Man of the Match for an influential all-round display.
