Following Sudan's historic victory at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, a Sudanese journalist offered a powerful tribute that placed national coach Kwesi Appiah's impact in the highest regard.
Journalist Ibrahim Salih made the emotional statement after Ghanaian coach Kwesi Appiah led Sudan to their first AFCON win in 13 years, a 1-0 triumph over Equatorial Guinea. In his assessment, Appiah's role in transforming the team's fortunes was paramount.
"To be honest, after God, I believe that Kwesi Appiah has done a lot for Sudan," Salih asserted, emphasising the scale of the coach's achievement. He highlighted the widespread disbelief that had surrounded the team's qualification for the tournament, crediting Appiah with a psychological revolution. "Nobody believed Sudan was going to qualify for AFCON. But Kwesi Appiah has a lot more than training. He worked on their mentality and made our players believe that they can do it."
Salih expressed that the team's presence in Morocco felt like a dream realised, one made possible solely by the coach's influence. His admiration has extended to Appiah's home country, fostering a sense of gratitude and affection. "We are so happy, and we love Ghana very well because Kwesi Appiah has done a lot for us," Salih stated, concluding with a heartfelt, "Thank you, Ghana."
The victory has positioned Sudan on the brink of the knockout stages, needing only a draw in their final Group E match against Burkina Faso to advance, a testament to the belief instilled by their Ghanaian coach.
