Tunisia have dismissed head coach Sami Trabelsi following their dramatic exit from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations at the hands of Mali in the Round of 16.
The decision came after Tunisia failed to take advantage of playing most of the match with a numerical edge, eventually losing to a resilient Mali side on penalties.
The Carthage Eagles had taken a late lead at the Mohammed V Stadium in the 88th minute but were unable to see out the game before falling in the shootout, despite Mali being reduced to ten men.
Trabelsi, 57, was relieved of his duties just hours after the final whistle. He had been appointed in February 2025 and recently guided Tunisia to qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, set to be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
However, Tunisia’s inability to control the match and secure progression at AFCON proved decisive. Reports indicate that the Tunisian Football Federation acted swiftly in response to the elimination, concluding that a change was necessary.
The federation is now expected to begin the search for a new head coach as it looks to steady the national team and refocus ahead of upcoming international commitments.
