Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) president Kwesi Nyantakyi has revealed that he was once a strong contender for the presidency of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) before stepping away from football administration in 2018.
Nyantakyi, a former FIFA Executive Council member, lost his positions following the release of the explosive investigative documentary Number 12 by Anas Aremeyaw Anas.
In an interview with Joy News on Tuesday, January 6, Nyantakyi said his role as CAF’s first vice president at the time made him the second-highest-ranking official on the continent, positioning him as a likely candidate for the top job.
“It was very possible. At the time I exited CAF and football, I was the first vice president of the federation,” he said, adding that he was the “next most senior football official on the continent of Africa.”
He noted that his departure represented a missed opportunity for Ghana to have a CAF president but believes the possibility remains for future leaders.
“So, Ghana would have had a CAF president. Although it is still possible⦠anybody who works hard can be the president,” he noted.
He resigned from his roles at the GFA, CAF, and FIFA in June 2018 amid widespread corruption allegations that shook Ghanaian football.
