Former Liverpool and Germany midfielder Didi Hamann has hailed Manchester United's Kobbie Mainoo as "a very clever player" with the talent to start for any of the Premier League's top clubs.
Hamann expressed his surprise that the 20-year-old had ever been sidelined this season, praising his intelligence and technical quality. "I was very surprised with the Kobbie Mainoo situation," Hamann said. "When I saw him break through at Man United and then in the Euros, it was just a breath of fresh air. A very clever player."
The pundit specifically highlighted Mainoo's composure and goal-scoring ability, recalling a memorable strike from last season. "He also scored a couple of good goals â I remember one where he beat two players and curled it into the far corner. He is an excellent player."
Hamann questioned why such a talented young midfielder struggled for minutes earlier in the campaign. "To not find a place for such a young kid at Manchester United â with the struggles they have at the moment â really flabbergasted me," he stated. The German believes Mainoo's quality extends far beyond Old Trafford, adding, "If he did decide to move away from Old Trafford, he would be good enough to start for Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool or Man City."
Mainoo's fortunes have changed dramatically following the dismissal of former manager Ruben Amorim and the appointment of Michael Carrick as interim head coach.
Under Carrick, the England international has re-established himself as a central figure in United's midfield, a resurgence that has prompted the club to prepare talks over an improved long-term contract.
With United's midfield veteran Casemiro set to depart and reported interest from other European clubs, securing Mainoo's future has become a priority.
His expected prominent role in United's upcoming clash against Arsenal provides the perfect stage to demonstrate why he is increasingly viewed not just as a promising talent, but as the intelligent, foundational player that Hamann and many others now recognize.
