Birmingham City manager Chris Davies has identified Ghanaian winger Ibrahim Osman's raw speed as the key asset the club will rely on during their push for promotion to the Premier League.
Davies made the remarks while discussing the January loan signing of Osman from Brighton and Hove Albion. The 21-year-old Ghana international arrives at St Andrew's for the remainder of the season after his previous loan spell at French Ligue 1 side AJ Auxerre was cut short.
Explaining the decision to bring Osman to the club, Davies pointed to the player's explosive physical attributes as the primary attraction.
"It was his pace and his ability to go one v one and be an outlet for the team," Davies said. "We've played with two wingers, and they are an important outlet for us, and creativity-wise, we need them to go past people, get crosses in and then get in the back post to score. Hopefully, he can do all that."
Davies emphasized that Osman's speed isn't just an individual skill but a strategic team asset, describing it as "his key" contribution to the squad. The manager's system relies heavily on wingers to provide width, stretch defenses, and create scoring opportunities from wide areasâa role Osman seems tailor-made for.
Osman's arrival comes at a crucial juncture for Birmingham City, who currently sit 13th in the 24-team EFL Championship. While not currently in the playoff positions, the club remains within striking distance of the top six, and Davies is counting on fresh attacking impetus to fuel their ascent.
The Ghanaian winger is expected to compete for a starting role immediately as Birmingham prepare for their next match against Stoke City on Saturday. This move represents Osman's third loan assignment since signing for Brighton, following previous spells at Feyenoord and Auxerre, as the Premier League club seeks to accelerate his development with regular Championship football.
If Osman can translate his blistering pace into a consistent end product, he could become the x-factor Birmingham City needs to reignite their promotion campaign and make a late push for a Premier League return.
