Former Sports Minister Edwin Nii Lantey Vanderpuye has expressed optimism that Antoine Semenyo can translate his blistering Manchester City form to the Black Stars as Ghana intensifies preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Ghana forward has captured headlines following his £65 million move from AFC Bournemouth to the Premier League champions in January 2026, a transfer that underlines his rising status in European football.
Semenyo has responded impressively, scoring 12 league goals by early February and becoming a key attacking option for Pep Guardiola’s side.
Vanderpuye believes the striker’s club performances have raised expectations among supporters who want to see him become a decisive figure for the national team in major tournaments ahead.
Since debuting for Ghana in 2022, Semenyo has played at the 2022 World Cup and the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, earning 32 caps and scoring three goals. Vanderpuye believes more is required at international level.
“He’s playing wonderfully well. I would just pray that he’s able to transfer whatever he’s doing with Manchester City to the Black Stars⦠up to now he’s not been able to convince Ghanaians so much about his prolific performance when it comes to the Black Stars,” he told Citi Sports.
He added that the forward’s English upbringing could inspire him further, saying, “You know he was born in England, and I think it is good⦠that is for him when he plays English.”
