Despite being held to a 2â2 draw at home on Sunday, head coach Charles Sampson says the Black Princesses are ready to do “everything we can” to defeat South Africa away and keep their FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup dreams alive.
Ghana’s hopes of qualifying for the tournament in Poland later this year took a hit after the thrilling but costly first-leg result at Accra Sports Stadium. Needing a win in Johannesburg to advance, Sampson remained defiant in his post-match comments.
“Our aim is to qualify, and thankfully, the games are not only one. We have another game, and this is only the first half of it,” Sampson stated.
“They came here and got, maybe, what they wanted. Now, we have to go there and get what we want to be able to go further. We will do everything we can and make sure we go to Johannesburg and qualify to the next round.”
The task ahead is clear: only a victory in South Africa will see the Black Princesses progress to the final qualifying round, where they would face either Zambia or Uganda.
Sampson’s side, which has qualified for every U-20 Women’s World Cup since 2010, is now under pressure to protect that perfect record. And while Sunday’s draw felt like a missed opportunity at home, the coach’s message was one of resolve, not regret.
The second leg is set to be a tense, all-or-nothing affairâone in which Ghana must turn promise into points on foreign soil.
