Asante Kotoko will head into next Sunday’s crunch Ghana Premier League showdown against arch-rivals Hearts of Oak without a substantive head coach following the resignation of Abdul Karim Zito Kabutey.
The Kumasi-based giants confirmed on Monday that Zito has stepped down from his role with immediate effect, a decision that has been accepted by the club’s management.
In a brief statement, Kotoko expressed appreciation for the coach’s services during his time at the club and wished him well in his future endeavours.
Zito’s departure comes in the wake of Kotoko’s disappointing exit from the FA Cup on Sunday.
The Porcupine Warriors were knocked out at the Baba Yara Stadium after suffering a 4-2 defeat in a penalty shootout to Aduana FC, following a goalless draw at the end of regulation time.
The elimination was a major blow to the club’s hopes of securing silverware this season and appears to have played a key role in the timing of the coach’s decision.
With the resignation taking effect immediately, Kotoko now face the daunting prospect of preparing for the Super Clash without a head coach in place.
The fixture against Hearts is one of the most fiercely contested matches in Ghanaian football, often carrying significant implications beyond league points.
Club officials have indicated that the new technical direction of Kotoko will be communicated in due course, suggesting that interim arrangements may be put in place ahead of the high-profile encounter.
In the meantime, attention will be on how the playing squad responds to the sudden change, as Kotoko look to rally themselves and deliver a strong performance against their oldest rivals despite the uncertainty on the technical bench.
