Ashanti Regional Circles Chairman of Asante Kotoko, Alex Manu, has weighed in on the resignation of former head coach Karim Zito, insisting the club’s passionate supporters should not shoulder sole responsibility for the coach's departure.
Speaking exclusively to Citi Sports, Manu acknowledged the immense pressure that comes with managing Kotoko but argued that Zitoâa former player and club legendâunderstood the expectations from the stands.
“Supporters are a pressure group. And Asante Kotoko supporters, we know nothing apart from victory. Which Karim Zito can attest to because he played for the club and played very well and won trophies,” Manu said.
He reminded fans and critics alike of Zito’s deep connection to the club’s golden era: “When Kotoko won our last championship in 1983, Zito was an active member of that team that won the last Champions League. So, he knows how important supporters are.”
Still, Manu suggested the club could have shown more patience with the now-departed gaffer. “To me, we should have had a lot of patience with him.”
Turning his attention to the playing squad, Manu stressed that accountability should extend beyond the technical bench. “He’s not working alone. He’s working with players. We should also go to the players and meet them one after the other to ask them if they had any issues. Because normally when players are having issues with each other, or they’re having issues with the club, this is how the performance always goes.”
Kotoko currently sit 5th in the Ghana Premier League with 35 points from 21 matchesâeight points behind leaders Medeama SCâand are preparing for the crucial Super Clash against Hearts of Oak on February 15, 2026.
Manu concluded with cautious optimism: “So, if you don’t take time and you sack your coach, the team also remains. But for this one, let’s see. We hope for the best.”
With Zito’s chapter closed, the Porcupine Warriors now look to regroup both on and off the pitch, hoping their storied rivalry with Hearts of Oak can spark a revival in their stuttering season.
