Former Ghana international and former captain ofâ¯VfL Wolfsburg, Charles Kwablan Akonnor, has advised young defender Jonas Adjetey to focus on earning a regular starting spot at the club.
Adjetey, 22, joined the German side this summer from Swiss outfit FC Basel, signing a contract that runs until 2030.
In an interview with Graphic Sports, Akonnor reflected on his own time at Wolfsburg, noting that although he faced challenges, players were generally supported by their clubs.
He highlighted how the environment improved as more Black players, including Pablo Thiam, made their mark in the league.
Akonnor also credited the 2006 FIFA World Cup with helping change perceptions in Germany.
“That World Cup helped Germans accept foreign nationals more, so Adjetey will have the privilege of being welcomed well,” he noted.
Looking ahead, Akonnor, who now works as the head coach for Kenyan side Go Mahia, stressed the importance of Adjetey establishing himself on the pitch.
“All he needs to do now is to work hard, become a starter and not just a bench player. That will help and prepare him for the next level,” he said.
