Asante Kotoko interim head coach Prince Yaw Owusu has acknowledged that Sunday's Super Clash defeat to Hearts of Oak has significantly damaged the Porcupine Warriors' hopes of winning the Ghana Premier League title.
Speaking after his first match in chargeâa tense 1â0 loss at Baba Yara StadiumâOwusu did not hide from the reality of what the result means for Kotoko's ambitions.
"Losing to Hearts of Oak makes it difficult for us to win the league," he admitted candidly.
The narrow defeat, decided by a first-half header from Baba Adamu, extended Kotoko's winless run to three matches and left them stranded in fifth place on 35 pointsânow four points behind fourth-placed Hearts and a daunting 11 points adrift of leaders Medeama SC with just 12 games remaining.
While the mathematics of a title challenge are not impossible, the margin for error has evaporated entirely.
Yet despite the setback, Owusu remains defiant about his ability to lead the team forward.
"Yes, there's no two ways about it," he stated when asked if he believes he is the right man for the job.
Kotoko now turn their attention to a Matchday 23 fixture against Young Apostles at the Wenchi Sports Stadiumâan immediate opportunity to halt the slide and begin the long climb back toward relevance.
The title race may have grown significantly harder. But for Owusu, the work continues.
