Referees Manager of the Ghana Football Association, Alexander Kotey harbours a bigger ambition of producing a Ghanaian referee capable of officiating the final of the FIFA World Cup, a feat that would mark a historic milestone for refereeing in the country.
Kotey believes the country has the potential to reach the pinnacle of refereeing on the global stage, insisting that with the right development structures, Ghana can produce officials who will handle the biggest matches in world football.
The experienced referees’ manager described the target as ambitious but achievable, stressing that the focus is not only on the current crop of referees but also on grooming the next generation of officials.
“I want to produce a Ghanaian referee capable of officiating a FIFA World Cup final. It is an ambitious target, but one I believe is achievable. If it doesn’t come from the current crop of FIFA referees we have, then I’m confident it will come from the next generation. Either way, we will get there.” He told Ghana FA media.
Kotey has been at the helm of refereeing development at the Ghana Football Association for the past five years, working to improve the quality of officiating across domestic competitions.
His vision forms part of broader efforts to elevate refereeing standards in Ghana, ensuring that local match officials are well-equipped to compete at the highest level in international football.
Currently, Ghana boast of only one top referee (Daniel Laryea), a member of the refereeing team that officiated the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Morocco.
