Walid Regragui has stepped down from his role as head coach of Morocco with immediate effect after failing to win the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations on home soil.
The development comes just months before the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, leaving the North African side facing an unexpected change as preparations for the tournament gather pace.
Sources indicate that Moroccan football authorities have already identified a possible replacement, with Mohamed Ouahbi emerging as the leading candidate to take over the vacant position.
An official announcement is expected later tonight during a press conference, where the federation is set to provide further information on Regragui’s departure and outline its plans moving forward.
Morocco will compete in a challenging group at the World Cup, where they are set to face Brazil, Scotland and Haiti during the group stage of the tournament in North America.
Regragui’s departure, therefore, comes at a crucial moment for the team, with attention now turning to how quickly a new coach can take charge and guide Morocco’s preparations ahead of the global competition.
Regragui led Morocco to the semi-final of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, and inspired their run to the 2025 AFCON final, losing the trophy to Senegal.
