VfB Stuttgart winger Jamie Leweling has been forced to withdraw from the German national team camp ahead of their upcoming international fixtures, including a highly anticipated clash against Ghana.
The 25-year-old attacker reported for duty in Herzogenaurach but left the squad on Tuesday following medical examinations that confirmed persistent muscular problems in his calf.
The injury officially rules Leweling out of Germany’s World Cup warm-up friendlies against Switzerland and the Black Stars.
German head coach Julian Nagelsmann expressed disappointment over the withdrawal but confirmed he does not currently plan to call up a replacement, despite existing injury concerns surrounding other key players like Jamal Musiala and Aleksandar PavloviÄ.
The timing of the injury is particularly poignant given Leweling’s historical ties to the Ghanaian national team.
In 2020, then-Black Stars coach CK Akonnor handed a 19-year-old Leweling his first international call-up while he was still a rising talent at Greuther Fürth in the 2. Bundesliga.
Although he was eligible to represent Ghana through his heritage, Leweling ultimately declined the invitation to pursue a career with his country of birth.
Since making that decision, Leweling has become a vital component of the German set-up, famously scoring the winning goal on his debut against the Netherlands in late 2024.
Missing the match against Ghana on March 30 in Stuttgart denies him a symbolic encounter against the nation that first identified his international potential five years ago.
For both teams, the upcoming friendly remains a critical assessment ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
Germany is using the fixture to simulate the physical challenges they expect against Ivory Coast in the group stages, while Ghana continues to fine-tune their squad for a difficult opening group featuring England and Croatia.
