The Parliament of Ghana is preparing to unveil the third edition of the Democracy Cup, a flagship initiative designed to promote national unity and deepen democratic values through sport.
In a statement released by the Parliamentary Service, Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, is expected to lead the official launch on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, at 11:00 GMT.
The ceremony will be held at the Justice D. F. Annan Auditorium within Parliament House in Accra.
The launch is being positioned as another key moment in the evolution of the Democracy Cup, which has steadily grown into one of the country’s most symbolic sporting events.
Since its introduction, the competition has sought to bridge football and governance, using the game’s broad appeal to strengthen national identity and encourage civic engagement.
Organisers say the tournament continues to tap into the unifying power of sport, fostering peaceful coexistence and social cohesion across Ghana.
This year’s event is expected to attract a diverse audience, including government officials, Members of Parliament, figures from the sporting community, corporate sponsors, and members of the diplomatic corps.
Beyond the domestic stage, the Democracy Cup is also attracting increasing international attention, with new partnerships aimed at elevating its global profile.
Further details, including participating clubs, fixtures, and prize packages, are expected to be announced in the coming days.
The Parliamentary Service has also extended invitations to the public and key stakeholders as preparations gather pace for what is being described as a bigger and more impactful edition.
Historically, the competition has delivered high-profile matchups. In its inaugural edition, Asante Kotoko triumphed over Hearts of Oak, while the second edition saw Hearts of Oak overcome city rivals Accra Great Olympics.
The third edition is expected to raise the bar further, with organisers anticipating a larger crowd and increased participation from dignitaries. The venue for the match is yet to be confirmed.
