Former Vice President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Fred Pappoe, has drawn confidence from the quality of players available to the Black Stars, insisting that the squad's potential outweighs concerns over the team's low FIFA ranking.
Speaking to Citi Sports following Ghana's drop to 74th in the latest FIFA Coca-Cola rankings, Pappoe acknowledged the challenges but refused to write off the team.
"I don't have an idea as to what is going to be the final 26. But at the end of the day, if you're looking at who could possibly be in the 26, it gives me comfort. I don't think our team is necessarily bad. I do not subscribe to that," he said.
Pappoe expressed hope that with the right mentality, technical approach, and a new coach in place, the Black Stars can defy expectations at the 2026 World Cup.
"Once we have the players with the right calibre of mind, the right mentality and the right approach, I'm not one who looks down on my team. I'm very hopeful with the array of players we have."
Ghana have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama. The Black Stars will open their campaign against Panama on June 17 in Toronto, before facing England in Boston on June 23 and Croatia in Philadelphia on June 27.
With a new head coach expected to be appointed soon, Pappoe's confidence rests on the belief that Ghana's squadâon paperâpossesses the talent to compete. The challenge now is to translate that potential into performance on football's biggest stage.
