Jonas Adjetey is unlikely to benefit from Konstantinos Koulierakis’ suspension when Wolfsburg face Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday, with coach Dieter Hecking indicating the defender remains on the fringes of the squad.
Despite the gap in central defence, Hecking suggested Adjetey is “still a bit behind” in his development.
The 22-year-old arrived on deadline day under difficult circumstances and immediately faced criticism, which complicated his settling-in period. His situation worsened after he gave away a penalty against Hamburg, a mistake that pushed him “into the second row” in Hecking’s eyes. Since then, he has struggled to climb back up the pecking order.
Hecking did, however, stress the positives, describing Adjetey as a “great young personality” who works hard and is eager to learn. The coach still sees weaknesses in his build-up play, decision-making and general reliability, noting that errors in training have counted heavily against him. As things stand, Wolfsburg are expected to line up with a back three of Moritz Jenz, Denis Vavro and Jeanuël Belocian against Frankfurt, leaving Adjetey watching from the bench and fighting to prove he can be a more trusted option.
Adjetey has made four appearances in the Bundesliga this season.
