Veteran Portuguese tactician Carlos Queiroz says he will rely on his vast coaching experience as he begins his new role as head coach of Ghana, with the 2026 FIFA World Cup as his immediate target.
The former assistant coach of Real Madrid and Manchester United has been appointed to replace Otto Addo, taking charge of the Black Stars following a disappointing run of results in recent international friendlies against Austria and Germany.
Queiroz, who was previously involved in talent development roles and national team coaching projects across multiple continents, said he is fully aware of the pressure surrounding the job but is ready to embrace the challenge.
“I know things are rough, I can feel it. I feel the vibrations of the Black Stars. This is the biggest challenge in my entire career, and I am ready for it. I will bring my 40 years of experience,” he said during his unveiling.
The 73-year-old arrives with one of the most extensive coaching résumés in international football. Over the years, he has managed several national teams, including Portugal national football team, Iran national football team, Egypt national football team, Japan national football team, Qatar national football team, and Oman national football team.
His World Cup pedigree is also notable. Queiroz guided South Africa toward qualification for the 2002 tournament, led Portugal to the Round of 16 in 2010, and managed Iran in both the 2014 and 2018 FIFA World Cups.
Ghana will now look to benefit from that experience as they prepare for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Canada, Mexico, and the United States. The Black Stars have been drawn into a challenging group and will begin their campaign against Panama on June 17 in Toronto, before facing England and Croatia in what promises to be a difficult group stage.
Queiroz is expected to immediately begin preparations, focusing on squad structure, tactical organisation, and rebuilding confidence within a team aiming to make a strong impact on the global stage.
