New Ghana head coach Carlos Queiroz has pledged to build a disciplined and competitive national team capable of challenging the best in world football, describing his new role as the most demanding assignment of his career.
Speaking at his first press conference in Accra following his appointment, Carlos Queiroz expressed both pride and realism about the expectations awaiting him in Ghana.
“It is an honour and a privilege to be here,” he told reporters. “After eight national teams, this is the biggest challenge of my career... Because when you work for Ghana, they expect nothing different than win, win, win.”
The experienced Portuguese coach made clear that results will be the ultimate measure of his tenure, insisting that success would depend on unity, discipline, and collective effort.
“If we play together, with the right mentality, we can beat any opponent in the world,” he said. “There is only one medicine in football â to win.”
Queiroz stressed that his immediate focus would be on assembling a balanced and committed squad, rather than relying solely on individual talent.
“My job is to bring the right players to build the right team,” he explained. “A group of talented players is not always a great team.”
He further underlined the importance of merit and competition for places in the national setup, making it clear that no player is guaranteed selection.
“The team is the most important player,” Queiroz said. “Nobody owns the national team shirt â it must be earned.”
The new Black Stars boss also reflected on Ghana’s rich football heritage, noting his ambition to help shape a stronger future for the country on the global stage.
“This is a country of footballers,” he said. “My duty is to manage the present but also build the future â a generation that can make Ghana not just a country of footballers, but a country of champions.”
Looking ahead, Queiroz promised a structured and patient approach as he begins his tenure.
“I promise hard work,” he said. “We go step by step â first game, then second, then third.”
His appointment marks the beginning of a new chapter for Ghana as the four-time African champions aim to rebuild and compete at the highest level under his experienced leadership.
Ghana will make their fifth appearance at the FIFA World Cup in 2026 after being drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama.
The Black Stars open their campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.
Queiroz has been tasked with steering Ghana beyond the group stage, following exits in 2014 and 2022, as expectations rise for a stronger showing on football’s biggest stage.
