Ghanaian forward Kwadwo Opoku played a key creative role as CF Montreal cruised to a dominant 5â0 win over Calgary Blizzard in the Canadian Championship preliminary round at Stade Saputo.
Lively from the off, Opoku tormented the visitors’ back line with his movement and link-up play in Montreal’s front three.
After Ivan Losenko had opened the scoring on 18 minutes, Montreal tightened their grip just before the break when Daniel RÃos made it 2â0.
Early in the second half, Opoku got his reward, sliding a precise pass into the path of Wiki Carmona, who finished clinically for the third goal to effectively end the contest. Further strikes from Iván Jaime and Frankie Amaya completed the scoring as Montreal’s attacking quality and intensity overwhelmed a Calgary side that failed to register a shot on target.
Opoku’s assist capped an excellent all-round display in which he constantly stretched the Blizzard defence and linked well with Carmona and RÃos. The victory sends CF Montreal confidently into the next round, and they will look to carry that momentum into MLS action when they host Orlando City at Stade Saputo on Saturday, May 9.
