Medeama SC stand on the brink of moving within touching distance of a second Ghana Premier League title as they prepare to host Heart of Lions in a must-win penultimate fixture at the Tarkwa and Aboso Stadium on Sunday.
The Mauve and Yellow head into the encounter with momentum and destiny firmly in their hands, leading defending champions Bibiani Gold Stars FC by two points at the top of the league table with only two matches remaining in the 2025/26 campaign. A victory over Heart of Lions, coupled with a failure by Gold Stars to win away at Dreams FC, could see Medeama crowned league champions.
Ibrahim Tanko’s side arrive in confident mood after returning to winning ways with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Basake Holy Stars FC - one of the toughest teams to beat at home this season. The result marked a strong response to their earlier setback against Berekum Chelsea and moved Medeama two points clear at the summit.
With 59 points from 32 matches, Medeama have combined attacking efficiency with defensive solidity, scoring a league-high 45 goals while conceding only 22. Their impressive form at the Tarkwa and Aboso Stadium further strengthens belief ahead of Sunday’s decisive clash.
The league leaders have been dominant on home soil this season, recording 11 wins, four draws, and only one defeat in 16 league matches. They have scored 30 goals and conceded just nine at home, while also winning each of their last three home fixtures, netting at least twice and keeping clean sheets in all three games.
However, Heart of Lions are unlikely to make matters straightforward. Bashir Hayford’s men travel to Tarkwa with renewed confidence after ending a three-match winless run in emphatic fashion, defeating FC Samartex 1996 3-0 in Kpando. The victory lifted them to 13th place with 42 points and eased concerns at the lower end of the table.
Despite struggling on the road in recent weeks - failing to win any of their last five away matches - Heart of Lions will take encouragement from their recent record against Medeama in Tarkwa. The visitors are unbeaten in their last two league trips to the venue, recording one win and one draw while keeping clean sheets in both encounters.
