Black Stars assistant coach Roger De Sa has revealed that accepting the opportunity to join Ghana’s senior national team technical setup was an easy choice due to the country’s rich football history and the magnitude of the FIFA World Cup.
The experienced South African coach was appointed as part of Carlos Queiroz’s backroom staff after the Portuguese tactician took charge of the Black Stars earlier this year on a short-term deal ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Queiroz replaced Otto Addo, who was relieved of his duties in March following Ghana’s successive defeats against Austria and Germany.
Speaking on the Beyond The Whistle podcast, De Sa explained that the invitation to work with Ghana immediately appealed to him because of the nation’s pedigree in world football.
“Being called to assist Carlos was not difficult. This is Ghana, and it’s the World Cup we are talking about,” he said.
The former Orlando Pirates coach also shared the emotional moment he received the call from Queiroz in the early hours of the morning.
“It was an exciting 3 am call. I told my wife first and, as custom, she said, âWe are leaving.’ I replied, âLet’s go!’” he added.
De Sa and Queiroz have worked together for several years, building a strong professional relationship across different national team assignments.
Meanwhile, the Black Stars are continuing preparations for the 2026 World Cup after suffering a 2-0 defeat to Mexico in an international friendly.
Ghana will now turn attention to another preparatory game against Wales on June 2 at the Cardiff City Stadium as the team fine-tunes preparations for the global tournament.
The Black Stars have been drawn in Group L of the 2026 FIFA World Cup alongside Panama, England, and Croatia.
Ghana will open their campaign against Panama at BMO Field in Toronto on June 17 before facing England at the Boston Stadium on June 23.
The four-time African champions will conclude their group-stage matches against Croatia at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on June 27.
