England defender Jarell Quansah has tipped Ghana to be a surprise package at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, just weeks before the two nations face off in Group L.
The Liverpool centre-back, who was a shock inclusion in Thomas Tuchel's England squad at the expense of Harry Maguire and Levi Colwill, made his prediction clear when asked which team could spring a surprise in North America.
"I'm going to say it's going to be Ghana. Obviously, my family is from there," Quansah said.
The 23-year-old, who qualifies for Ghana through his family roots, had a brilliant season in the Bundesliga with Bayer Leverkusen. His form earned him a surprise call-up to the England squad, bypassing more established names.
Quansah's comments add an interesting subplot to the upcoming Group L clash between England and Ghana on June 23. The Black Stars will be looking to prove him right, while the Three Lions will aim to justify their status as tournament favourites.
Ghana open their World Cup campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England and Croatia. For Quansah, the match against Ghana will carry personal significance, even as he represents the Three Lions.
