Kylian Mbappe could barely contain his emotion after becoming France's all-time leading goalscorer, breaking Olivier Giroud's record with a brace in Les Bleus' 3-1 World Cup victory over Senegal.
He etched his name further into French football history, becoming France's all-time leading goalscorer with his 58th and 59th international goals in a 3-1 World Cup victory over Senegal.
The 27-year-old Real Madrid forward surpassed Olivier Giroud's mark of 57 goals with a brace in France's Group I opener, moving him clear at the top of the nation's scoring charts.
"I'm very happy to be able to write a bit more of the history of my country. It's always what I have wanted to do," Mbappe said.
Mbappe opened the scoring in the first half, finishing off a brilliant assist from Michael Olise to draw level with Giroud. He then sealed the win with a clinical finish for France's third goal, cementing his place as Les Bleus' greatest-ever goalscorer.
"I'm here to help the team, to continue with my teammates to write another page in the history of the French national team. We know there is still a long way but we are ready."**
Beyond the French record, Mbappe also moved to 14 career World Cup goals, closing in on the all-time record of 16 shared by Miroslav Klose and Lionel Messi.
Mbappe's next opportunity to add to his tally will come when France face Iraq on June 21, followed by Norway on June 25.
For now, his focus remains on helping France defend their world crown. The records, he insists, can wait.
