Black Stars midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi has reiterated his readiness to serve Ghana in any role, saying his focus remains on helping the team rather than the position he is assigned.
The young midfielder delivered a decisive moment in Ghana’s World Cup opener, striking a stoppage-time winner against Panama to seal a crucial 1-0 victory and secure all three points in Group L.
Yirenkyi’s development has seen him used in varying roles. Under former head coach Otto Addo, he was frequently deployed at right-back â a tactical decision that drew discussion among observers who felt it limited his influence in midfield. His return to a central role under Carlos Queiroz has coincided with a notable rise in performance levels.
The adjustment has also sharpened his impact in front of goal, with the midfielder now registering two international strikes, including his first at World Cup level.
Speaking after the match, Yirenkyi brushed aside questions about his preferred position, stressing his willingness to adapt for the national cause.
“I’m just quite happy to serve my nation anywhere on the field. I don’t really mind. Just do the job,” he said.
Ghana’s opening victory places them second in Group L behind England, who began their campaign with a 4-2 win over Croatia.
Attention now turns to a high-profile meeting with England at Gillette Stadium on June 23, before the Black Stars conclude their group stage campaign against Croatia four days later.
Carlos Queiroz’s side will be hoping to build on their strong start as they chase a return to the knockout stages for the first time since their historic quarter-final run in 2010.
