Black Stars captain Jordan Ayew has credited Ghana's patience and improved second-half display for the team's dramatic 1-0 victory over Panama in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking to Ghanafa.org, Ayew admitted the Black Stars struggled to impose themselves before the break but said the players remained calm despite Panama's bright start.
"The first half didn't go as planned, but we were patient," Ayew said.
"They kept the ball well, and we soaked up the pressure. In the second half, a lot changed. We grew in confidence and kept possession much better."
Ghana found the breakthrough deep into stoppage time when Caleb Yirenkyi finished off Brandon Thomas-Asante's cross to hand the Black Stars all three points in Toronto.
Ayew said the team deserved credit for staying together and responding positively after a difficult opening 45 minutes.
"We looked more composed and direct after the break. We believed in ourselves and kept working until the end."
The victory leaves Ghana level on three points with England at the top of Group L ahead of Tuesday's meeting between the two sides in Boston.
