Trailing 1-0 at half-time to World Cup debutants Uzbekistan, the DR Congo bounced back in spectacular fashion at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, turning the game on its head to secure a historic 3-1 victory that sends them through to the round of 32 for the first time in their history.
For 45 minutes, it looked like the dream was slipping away but the Leopards roared back purposefully.
Uzbekistan had stunned the Africans early, taking the lead in the 10th minute when Eldor Shomurodov fired a left-footed shot into the top right corner. The goal sent a jolt of anxiety through the Congolese ranks, and their frustration was compounded when Nathanael Mbuku had a potential equaliser ruled out by VAR for a foul in the build-up.
Trailing at the break, DR Congo coach Sebastien Desabre knew his side needed a response. He got one.
The second half was a different story. The Leopards, having switched to a more attacking formation with the inclusion of the pacey Brian Cipenga, threw everything at the Uzbek defence. Their persistence paid off with Yoane Wissa restoring parity from the spot before Fiston Mayele added a second. Yoane Wissa sealed the win in stoppage time sparking wild celebrations among the Congolese players and fans alike.
For DR Congo, the victory means everything. It secures their place in the knockout stages as one of the best third-placed teams and sets up a blockbuster round of 32 clash against England. It is a monumental achievement for a nation that last appeared at a World Cup in 1974 as Zaire, and had never before advanced beyond the group stage.
For Uzbekistan, the defeat brings a heartbreaking end to their debut World Cup campaign. They bow out with their heads held high, having scored their first-ever goal in the competition, but ultimately falling short of qualification.
