World Cup 2026: Ghana's defeat to Colombia disappointing - Carlos Queiroz

Ghana head coach Carlos Queiroz described the World Cup exit as a deeply disappointing outcome after the Black Stars were beaten 1-0 by Colombia in Kansas City.

Speaking after the Round of 32 defeat, the Portuguese coach pointed to his team’s effort but admitted the result fell short of expectations.

“It’s a disappointing result. It’s disappointing because the boys worked hard. They tried their best. But the reality is that, on the day, especially in terms of passing and controlling the game, the Colombia team was better.”

The loss brought Ghana’s tournament to an end at the first knockout stage.

The match was settled in the 14th minute when Jhon Arias scored the only goal of the game, finishing from close range after a well-delivered cross from substitute Luis Suárez.

Suárez had been introduced early following an injury to Jhon Córdoba, who was forced off with a groin problem inside the opening stages. His immediate contribution proved decisive, as he picked out Arias at the back post with precision.

From that moment, Ghana struggled to find rhythm in the final third, with Colombia managing the contest and protecting their advantage.

Despite spells of possession, Ghana were unable to convert their build-up play into clear chances. The Black Stars failed to register a shot on target, reflecting their difficulties in breaking down Colombia’s organised defensive shape.

Goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi was called into action several times to keep Ghana in the contest, but the lack of cutting edge at the other end ultimately proved costly.

The defeat ended a campaign that showed promise in moments but left the squad reflecting on missed opportunities in the knockout stage.
