Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku has rallied the Black Queens ahead of their opening match at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), urging the players to represent the nation with courage, pride and determination as they pursue continental glory in Morocco.
The Black Queens begin their Group D campaign against tournament debutants Cape Verde on Wednesday, July 29, at the Moulay Rachid Stadium in Casablanca. The fixture marks the start of Ghana’s quest to win a first-ever WAFCON title after coming close on several occasions in previous editions.
Ahead of the crucial opener, Okraku issued a stirring message to the players while calling on Ghanaians both at home and across the world to unite behind the national team throughout the tournament.
“The Black Queens head into the tournament with renewed confidence and ambition following their impressive bronze-medal finish at the last edition.”
“They now have an opportunity not only to challenge for continental honours but also to secure qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup and return Ghana to the pinnacle of women’s football.”
“To the Black Queens, the entire nation is behind you. Play with courage, pride and determination, and go out there to make Ghana proud.”
Following their opening fixture against Cape Verde, Ghana will continue their Group D campaign against Cameroon on Sunday, August 2, before concluding the group stage with a clash against Mali on Thursday, August 6.
Having claimed the bronze medal at the previous edition of the tournament, the Black Queens will be aiming to go even further this year as they seek to end Ghana’s long wait for a WAFCON title and secure qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
