The transfer market has a new king. Ivory Coast defender Yan Diomande has officially become the most expensive African player in history, following his blockbuster â¬125 million move from RB Leipzig to Real Madrid, securing the top spot on the all-time list of African transfers.
The Ivorian's move pushes the previous record holder, Nicolas Pepe, into second place. Here is how the all-time top 10 African transfers now stand.
Yan Diomande â RB Leipzig to Real Madrid: â¬125M
Nicolas Pepe â Lille to Arsenal: â¬80M
Victor Osimhen â Lille to Napoli: â¬78.9M
Victor Osimhen â Napoli to Galatasaray: â¬75M
Omar Marmoush â Eintracht Frankfurt to Manchester City: â¬75M
Bryan Mbeumo â Brentford to Manchester United: â¬75M
Antoine Semenyo â Bournemouth to Manchester City: â¬72M
Achraf Hakimi â Inter Milan to PSG: â¬68M
Riyad Mahrez â Leicester City to Manchester City: â¬67.8M
Mohammed Kudus â West Ham United to Tottenham Hotspur: â¬63.8M
A notable exception on the list is Cedric Bakambu. When the DR Congo forward joined Beijing Guoan from Villarreal in 2018, the direct transfer fee paid to the selling club was â¬40 million.
However, the Chinese club was also required to pay a mandatory 100% tax levy of â¬34 million to the Chinese Football Association, bringing the overall financial outlay to â¬74 million. When considering only the direct fee paid to the selling club, Bakambu's transfer falls outside the top 10.
The list reflects the growing financial power of African footballers in the global transfer market, with eight different nationalities represented and a combined total of over â¬750 million spent on these ten record-breaking deals.
