Korea Republic defender admits Ghanaâ??s speed and strength proved too much at U-20 World Cup

Korea Republic defender Nam Seungeun has admitted that Ghana’s speed and physical strength proved too much for her side in their 3-1 defeat at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.

The Black Princesses produced a strong second-half performance to secure a crucial victory in their Group C encounter, with captain Sarah Nyarko, Ivy Osei Owusu and substitute Ruth Amponsah finding the net.

Nam acknowledged that Korea Republic struggled to match Ghana physically and failed to respond quickly enough when the Black Princesses increased the tempo.

“We were definitely lacking in speed and strength compared to the Ghana players. To overcome that, we needed to make quicker decisions and move the ball faster, but we weren’t able to do that today,” Nam said.

The defender said the experience of facing Ghana had also exposed areas of her own game that need improvement.

“Having previously only played against teams in Asia, competing at the World Cup against strong teams from different countries has made me realise that I need to improve technically, as well as in terms of speed and strength,” she added.

Nam believes the experience will motivate her to work harder and develop the areas identified during the tournament.

“To do that, I know I need to work even harder than I do now,” she said.

The defeat leaves Korea Republic needing a positive result against Ecuador in their final group game to keep their hopes of reaching the Round of 16 alive.

For Ghana, the victory was a major boost to their hopes of reaching the knockout stage for the first time in their history.
