Kurt Okraku: Jordan Ayew did not turn down Black Stars call-up

Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku has clarified that Jordan Ayew did not turn down a call-up to the Black Stars for the upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Ayew was initially included in Carlos Queiroz's squad but subsequently withdrew from the team after medical examinations revealed an injury.

According to Okraku, the Sheffield United forward travelled to Ghana after receiving the invitation and was assessed by the team's medical staff.

“Jordan Ayew didn’t turn down the Black Stars call-up. But he has some medical challenges. He flew all the way to Ghana and you saw him in camp, and our doctor took him to a medical facility for MRI, which detected his injury,” Okraku said, as quoted by Asempa FM.

Okraku also praised Ayew's commitment to the national team, saying the experienced forward has consistently made himself available whenever called upon.

“Jordan Ayew has served the Black Stars for so many years. He’s extremely dedicated to the Black Stars. It doesn’t matter whether it’s in the morning, afternoon or dawn, if you invite him, he’ll turn up,” he added.

The clarification comes after Ayew's withdrawal from the squad ahead of Ghana's opening 2027 AFCON qualifying match against Cote d’Ivoire in Bouake on Thursday.

Ghana will then return home to face The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium on September 27.
