A nationwide survey conducted by the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) Ghana, contained in a news release has identified Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as the clear front-runner ahead of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) January 2026 presidential primaries, while highlighting strong expectations for competent, ethical and development-oriented leadership.
The survey, according to the news release issued by KAS Ghana, sampled more than 18,000 respondents nationwide, comprising over 5,000 NPP delegates and about 13,000 non-delegate citizens.
The respondents represented a broad national mix across urban, peri-urban and rural communities, with 41 per cent drawn from rural areas. Participants also cut across all age groups, educational and employment backgrounds, religions and ethnic groups, ensuring the findings reflect a wide cross-section of Ghanaian society.
Key findings from the survey show that competence ranks as the most important quality expected of the next NPP flagbearer, accounting for 24.9 per cent of responses. This is followed by experience (20.3 per cent), vision (16.9 per cent), accessibility at the grassroots level (14.1 per cent) and charisma (8.5 per cent). Identity-based considerations such as age, gender, religion or ethnicity collectively accounted for less than one per cent.
On leadership qualities, 69.7 per cent of NPP delegates identified Dr Bawumia as best reflecting the desired attributes, compared to 22.5 per cent for Kennedy Agyapong and six per cent for Dr Bryan Acheampong. Among non-delegates, Dr Bawumia also led with 52.9 per cent, though Mr Agyapong recorded stronger support at 31.2 per cent.
Regarding overall suitability as flagbearer, delegates gave Dr Bawumia a decisive 67.8 per cent, placing him nearly three times ahead of his closest challenger. The survey also revealed strong enthusiasm for the primaries, with 84.5 per cent of delegates expressing high interest and more than 91 per cent indicating they are likely to vote.
KAS noted that the survey forms part of its commitment to strengthening democratic dialogue and evidence-based political debate in Ghana.
