The Ghana Police Service has launched a nationwide manhunt for individuals who allegedly purchased pump-action guns from an illicit firearms trader operating around the Sodom and Gomorrah enclave in Accra.
The Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), Commissioner of Police (COP) Lydia Donkor, disclosed this at a press briefing on Wednesday, where she outlined key operational successes recorded between November and December 2025 across the Greater Accra Region and other parts of the country.
According to COP Donkor, the Police, through an intelligence-led operation, arrested an arms dealer in Accra at the point of a transaction.
During interrogation, the suspect admitted to previously purchasing and transporting seven pump-action guns to individuals in the Northern Region.
” Investigations are ongoing to trace and arrest persons who acquired the weapons,” she said.
The CID boss said the briefing also focused on several high-profile arrests, including a breakthrough in the investigation into the GH¢7.5 million daylight robbery at Adabraka.
Police arrested a suspect identified as Salim Mohammed, also known as Fawatha, in connection with the robbery.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect and his accomplices, armed with AK-47 assault rifles, intercepted the victim’s vehicle, fired multiple shots, injured the driver, and escaped with the cash.
Efforts are underway to arrest the remaining suspects and recover the stolen money.
In a related operation, five members of a notorious phone-snatching and armed robbery syndicate operating in Accra and Tema were arrested at their hideout.
Police recovered one pistol and one pump-action gun, believed to have been used in several robbery operations.
Investigations linked the syndicate to a violent robbery attack on mourners at the Ashaiman Under Bridge, where cash and valuables worth more than GH¢200,000 were stolen.
The Police also arrested eight suspects in connection with a violent residential robbery at Apollonia. Items retrieved from the suspects include helmets, cutlasses, boots, and a body armour vest, which are being used to support ongoing investigations.
In another intelligence-led operation, a suspect impersonating a military officer was arrested in parts of Ashalaja in the Greater Accra Region.
A search conducted on him led to the recovery of two foreign-registered pistols, live 9mm and AK-47 ammunition, a military camouflage bag, a bayonet, a Huawei device, and a pair of handcuffs bearing serial number 46446.
Preliminary investigations indicate the suspect used the impersonation to intimidate the public and facilitate criminal activities.
COP Donkor further announced that the Police had secured the conviction of Peregrino Briamah Abubakah Sadick, also known as Cyborg, who was found unlawfully discharging a firearm in public.
He was fined 2,000 penalty units, equivalent to GH¢24,000, while his firearm licence was revoked and the weapon confiscated by the state.
The Ghana Police Service reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing the law and curbing the proliferation of illegal firearms.
The CID Director-General reminded the public of the ongoing nationwide gun amnesty programme and urged citizens to voluntarily surrender illegal or unregistered firearms to the appropriate authorities.
She commended police officers for their dedication and professionalism and expressed appreciation to media houses for their continued partnership in the fight against crime, expressing optimism for a safer and more impactful 2026.
