About 118 former New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidates who contested the 2024 General Elections have declared their support for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia ahead of the party’s presidential primary scheduled for January 31, 2026. They have described him as the most prepared, formidable and winnable candidate to lead the party into the 2028 general elections.
Addressing a news conference yesterday, the former candidates dismissed claims that Dr. Bawumia was responsible for the party’s 2024 electoral defeat, insisting that such assertions are “unscientific and unsupported by evidence.”
They cited findings from the NPP’s own Oquaye Committee, as well as independent studies by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, the NPP Parliamentary Caucus and the University of Ghana’s Political Science Department, which they say clearly established that Dr. Bawumia was not the cause of the party’s loss.
The group said their endorsement followed extensive consultations with grassroots party structures, including polling station executives, constituency officers, elders and patrons across the country.
They described Dr. Bawumia as the most consequential Vice President of the Fourth Republic, crediting him with championing Ghana’s digital transformation, including the Ghana Card, mobile money interoperability and the digitisation of public services.
As Chair of the Economic Management Team, Dr. Bawumia was also credited with leading key stabilisation measures, notably the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme—popularly known as Gold for Reserves, Gold for Forex and Gold for Oil—which the group said helped shore up Ghana’s economy in the aftermath of COVID-19, the energy sector debt and the banking sector clean-up.
They further cited his role in supporting major infrastructure development in roads, education and healthcare, including the Agenda 111 hospitals project.
According to the former aspirants, when experience, competence, vision and integrity are considered together, none of the other contenders matches Dr. Bawumia’s pedigree.
“He is simply the most PREPARED, FORMIDABLE AND WINNABLE candidate,” they declared.
The group pledged to support Dr. Bawumia’s bid in the January 31, 2026 presidential primaries and work towards securing victory for the NPP in the 2028 general elections.
