Former Vice President of Ghana, Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who has won the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primary, has paid glowing tribute to the party’s past leaders, describing them as the pillars upon whose sacrifices and leadership the party has been built.
Dr. Bawumia made the remarks when he addressed party stalwarts in Accra after emerging victorious in the keenly contested presidential primary.
Describing the contest as fiercely fought, Dr. Bawumia said the victory was the result of teamwork and unwavering support from party faithful across the country.
“It’s been a fierce battle that we have waged across the country, across all the regions, and we could not have gotten here without the support of the team around me,” he said. “You are only as good as your team in these matters, and I can say without any fear of contradiction that I have been blessed with an excellent team.”
He expressed special appreciation to the National Campaign Coordinator, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the Campaign Manager, Fred Opare-Ansah, and the entire campaign team for their dedication.
Dr. Bawumia also commended Members of Parliament who stood firmly behind his campaign, describing their support as phenomenal.
“The MPs who stood by my side were phenomenal in this contest. They supported the campaign and delivered on what they promised,” he stated.
He further thanked party executives and institutions involved in the organisation of the primary, including the Electoral Commission, security agencies, and the media, for ensuring a smooth and credible process.
Reflecting on the party’s history, Dr. Bawumia acknowledged the foundational role played by former flagbearers of the NPP, including Prof. Albert Adu Boahen, former President J.A. Kufuor, and President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
“We are standing on the broad shoulders of former flagbearers of this party. They built the party and brought it this far,” he said. “It is truly humbling that I have been elected as flagbearer to continue the work they started, not forgetting the contributions of former Members of Parliament.”
He concluded by expressing gratitude to party members nationwide and invoked God’s blessings on them.
“God bless you all,” he said.
A total of 211,849 delegates voted in the NPP presidential primary, which was conducted simultaneously at 333 polling centres nationwide to determine the party’s flagbearer for the upcoming general elections.
Five aspirants contested the party’s top position: former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia; former Assin Central Member of Parliament Kennedy Agyapong; former Minister of Education Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum; former Minister of Food and Agriculture Dr. Bryan Acheampong; and former General Secretary of the party Kwabena Agyepong.
