The Government of Ghana has ordered the immediate medical evacuation of eight nationals who were attacked by jihadists in Titao, northern Burkina Faso, last Saturday, February 14, 2026.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, seven members of the Ghana National Tomatoes Traders and Transporters Association were initially killed, while an eighth victim—who had sustained serious injuries—later succumbed while receiving treatment abroad.
On the instructions of President John Mahama, the Ghana Air Force is conducting a medical evacuation by air. The injured and the remains of the deceased are expected to arrive in Ghana later today.
Ghana’s Ambassador to Burkina Faso and embassy staff are maintaining close contact with the victims and coordinating all arrangements, while the Government of Burkina Faso has granted full cooperation to facilitate the evacuation.
Evacuation Process and Support
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that all measures were taken in consultation with medical experts to ensure the safe and dignified transport of the victims. Families of the deceased and injured are being kept informed throughout the process.
President Mahama expressed profound condolences to the families and described the attack as a “mindless act of terror,” reiterating Ghana’s solidarity with Burkina Faso in tackling extremist violence.
Travel Advisory Issued
In parallel, the Ministry has issued new travel guidelines for high-risk areas. Citizens planning to travel to regions prone to violent extremism are urged to contact Ghanaian embassies or the Ministry for guidance. Residents in affected areas are advised to restrict movement and maintain regular communication with diplomatic missions.
“The safety, security, and well-being of Ghanaians remain our utmost priority,” the Ministry statement stressed.
