NDC to hold public lectures, commemorative events to mark June 4 

Mr. Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has unveiled a series of activities nationwide to mark the June 4, 2026 edition of the party’s annual “NDC Month”.

The theme for the commemoration is:  “Strengthening State Institutions: Lessons from the June 4, 1979 Uprising”with a renewed focus on strengthening state institutions and promoting accountable governance.

The NDC Chief Scribe, who made the official announcement while addressing the media at the NDC Headquarters in Adabraka, Accra, on Friday, said the annual commemoration is dedicated to reflection, remembrance, recommitment and renewal of the ideals that shaped the party’s political tradition.

The NDC Chief Scribe noted that this year’s observance officially began on May 15, 2026 a date he described as historically significant in Ghana’s political evolution, leading to the formation of the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) and eventually the NDC.

He explained that the June 4 Uprising symbolised the demand for accountability, discipline, integrity and social justice in governance, adding that those whose values remain relevant in contemporary Ghanaian politics.

“The principles of probity, accountability, inclusiveness and people-centered governance, which formed the moral foundation of June 4 are inseparable from the broader national reset agenda currently underway,” he stated.

The NDC General Secretary said the government’s ongoing Reset Agenda, under President John Dramani Mahama, seeks to rebuild confidence in public institutions, strengthen democratic governance and improve service delivery to ordinary Ghanaians.

Mr. Kwetey also paid tribute to the founder of the NDC and former President, Jerry John Rawlings, describing him as a patriotic leader whose commitment to probity, accountability and democratic governance continues to inspire generations within and outside the party.

He announced that several commemorative and educational activities would take place throughout June across the country with the participation of party members, cadres, traditional leaders, youth groups and civil society organizations.

Among the major events outlined are a public lecture in the Banda Constituency on June 3 focusing on the historical significance of the June 4 uprising and accountable governance; a ceremonial flag raising, wreath laying and durbar in the Bono Region on June 4; and the observance of NDC Day on June 10 aimed at promoting political participation among women and the youth.

The party will also commemorate Cadres Day in Kumasi on June 19 under the theme: “Ensuring Transparent Governance: The Role of Cadres.”

The NDC also plans to mark Founder’s Day on June 22 with activities including the naming of the party’s headquarters after former President Rawlings and the unveiling of his bust in honour of his contribution to Ghana’s democratic development.

Mr. Kwetey urged party members, sympathizers and Ghanaians to actively participate in the activities, stressing that the observance is intended not only as a ceremonial event but also as an opportunity for political education and national reflection.

The NDC Chief Scribe reaffirmed the NDC’s commitment to social justice, transparent governance and the empowerment of ordinary citizens, while calling on supporters to uphold the spirit of unity, patriotism and accountability.
