Mr James Gunu, Volta Regional Minister, has commended the Minister for Roads and Highways, Mr Governs Kwame Agbodza, for adopting a multi-contract approach to the implementation of road projects under the Government’s “Big Push” infrastructure programme.
To him, the strategy would enhance efficiency, accountability, and healthy competition among contractors. Mr Gunu made the remarks after joining Mr Agbodza on the first day of a two-day inspection tour of ongoing road projects across the Eastern, Volta and Oti Regions.
The inspection team included Mr Alhassan Sayibu Suhuyini, Deputy Minister for Roads and Highways, Mr Thomas Worlanyo Tsekpo, Member of Parliament for Hohoe, as well as senior officials from the Ministry of Roads and Highways, the Ghana Highway Authority and technical engineers supervising the projects.

The tour forms part of Government’s efforts to monitor the implementation of key road infrastructure projects, assess the quality and pace of work, identify implementation challenges and ensure the timely completion of strategic road networks aimed at improving connectivity and accelerating socio-economic development.
During the exercise, the delegation inspected selected road corridors, where engineers and project consultants presented technical updates on the progress of work, project timelines, and measures being adopted to address emerging challenges.
The team also assessed the quality of construction works and engaged contractors and supervising engineers on strategies to ensure value for money and strict adherence to engineering standards. Speaking after the inspection, Mr Gunu reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to delivering quality road infrastructure to support economic growth and improve access to communities across the three regions.
“Our commitment remains unwavering to ensuring these strategic road projects are completed on schedule and to the highest standards to improve connectivity and accelerate socio-economic development across our communities,” he said.
Mr Gunu said awarding different sections of the projects to multiple contractors would promote healthy competition, improve performance and make it easier to identify contractors who failed to meet expected standards.
He noted that the approach would encourage contractors to accelerate work, deliver quality projects, and remain accountable for their respective sections of the contracts.
The Regional Minister also assured the Ministry of Roads and Highways of the continued support of the Volta Regional Coordinating Council and the Volta Regional House of Chiefs in monitoring the projects to ensure quality and timely completion.
He said the Regional Coordinating Council would continue collaborating closely with the Ministry, contractors and other stakeholders to ensure that all projects were executed according to specification and delivered on schedule for the benefit of communities across the Volta Region.
